Cosmic Gate continues to whip floors to frenzy-level in all four corners. Most recently they’ve rocked some of America’s most prominent events – Electric Zoo, The Electric Daisy Festival, Audiotistic and Perfecto Night in Las Vegas among them. They’ve brought mayhem to Ibiza’s 2010 season with hugely received performances at Armada at Amnesia and Judgement Sundays, played mammoth the Global Gathering festival in Russia and headlined Godskitchen’s tours in Australia and Mexico. They’ve appeared in DJ Magazine’s list of Top 100 spinners for 7 consecutive years now and are regular festival attraction, spinning at events like Trance Energy, Mysteryland and Dance Valley in Holland, Smirnoff Experience in India and on the horizon Future Music in Australia in 2011.

As leader of the blues bar pack, the Rhythm Room rolls up its sleeves to unearth Phoenix’s blues and R&B roots. The barroom lures top bands seven nights a week, digging deep for local treasures and searching far afield for national acts. In between a wall of bar and a wall of stage, experienced pros and new cats mingle, knowing full well that this is a place of preeminent musicians. When the harmonica yowls, it’s go time: All eyes are on the contorted faces of master musicians. Patrons savor raspy baritone bawls and painfully bent guitar strings. The centrally located Rhythm Room has plenty of seating and parking to handle its stature as a Phoenix institution of live music. If the sparse rectangular atmosphere of the room doesn’t do it for you, the rhythm will surely get you. One of the Valley’s premier blues clubs recently got a face-lift. In addition to an expensive, updated sound system, the Rhythm Room also got a spacious patio, where you can smoke and drink (the patio bar usually has a shorter line, too). The club has also been booking more rock acts along with its usual stock of blues bands, which means you could, in theory, see Jimmie Vaughan or Sistah Blue sandwiched between a Gene Loves Jezebel and a Red Elvises show.

The Martini Ranch concept was born out of an idea blending the casual, come as you are attitude of a local bar and grill with the state of the art Audio, Video and entertainment systems of big city nightclubs. By successfully incorporating these two distinct atmospheres into one unique concept, we have been able to capture a vast and varied customer base. This combination of themes has been the key to the longevity of Martini Ranch. The original Martini Ranch in Scottsdale AZ was a more intimate localized live music lounge. Martini Ranch has since become synonymous with high quality live entertainment and an upscale lounge atmosphere second to none in Scottsdale. To keep up with the ever-changing club atmosphere, in early 2000 we opened The Shaker Room, an upscale lounge and dance club addition adjacent to Martini Ranch. The success was instantaneous and unparalleled. Situated in the heart of Scottsdale’s tourist destination of ‘Old Town’, Martini Ranch has stayed on the cutting edge and enjoyed unmatched popularity since its inception in October of 1994.

It wasn’t that the guitarist was straddling the bar – hips, and more, at the crowd’s eye level. It wasn’t that he filled the crowded room with clutch riffs from Smells Like Teen Spirit, Foxy Lady and Seven Nation Army.  It was his pants, a certain kind of skin-tight black jeans that made women stop dancing and start looking.

“His pants are so tight, you can see his pockets,” one woman exclaimed. “And his junk.” And so you could. And that sexiness, that attention to rock star detail, can be found all over Dirty Pretty Rockbar, Old Town Scottsdale’s newest nightspot. To start, guitarist Mike Loy, formerly of the Valley band Chronic Future, gives 5-minute mini rock shows on Thursday and Saturday nights that are arresting, swaggering performances. In a town this filled with nightlife hype and histrionics, it’s something to impress a hard-drinking crowd of pretty people in a deafeningly loud bar. And as such, Dirty Pretty, which moved into the space on 6th Avenue and 75th Street where Bar 74 used to be, is like a little slice of West Hollywood’s Viper Room right here in the Valley. But the club’s décor is a little too much like a set piece, the women a little too carefully coiffed, the bar-top guitar work a little too made-for-TV-safe. So for all its posing, Dirty Pretty is still not particularly gritty, still a few junkies shy of Sunset Boulevard.

But that’s what makes it so perfect for Scottsdale.

The Valley wants its dirty pretty, and its rock bars slightly sanitized in the same way that it wants its women free of body hair and its men smelling only of Dolce & Gabbana.

By 10:30 p.m. on a recent Friday night (Loy came in for a special set), the mostly-female crowd was a mix of women in babydoll dresses and men in graphic Ts and shredded jeans. D-JR, the resident DJ the club shares with nearby Pussycat Lounge, which is also run by Dirty Pretty owner Ryan Jocque, mixed snippets of songs over hip-hop beats, reinventing hits from Peter, Bjorn and John; Run-DMC and John Mellencamp.  Making mini mashups throughout the night, D-JR kept the energy up to an almost frenetic level, rallying the crowd repeatedly with old-school Madonna, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. He peaked amazingly with a whiplashing mash of Hollaback Girl and Smells Like Teen Spirit. (LimeWire it now.)

Of course, this meant that around 12:30 a.m., he’d burned through much of the rock and hip-hop cannon readily familiar to the casual radio listener that makes up his crowd, and resorted to bland house and techno. The bar itself is just as groomed as the set list, with wood flooring, a faux-aged wood beam ceiling, jewel-tone chandeliers, brocade couches and gilt-trimmed coffee tables sprouting gold stripper poles. Other clever touches include bottle-service tables lit with chintz-trimmed mini lights, a working $5 photo booth and a flat-screen TV at the front of the red-lit bar that details bottle and cocktail prices with a scrolling electronic menu.

The waitresses sport pseudo-porn star ensembles that reference an all-black version of Madonna’s Like A Virgin look, with high boots, big hair and a big belt buckle. But no matter how chic the surroundings, how loud the music, how sing-along-worthy the mashups, Loy is the star attraction at this club and it’s a shame he’s only there 10 minutes a week.

“I think it’s pretty awesome,” said Mesa’s Tara Schweitzer, 28, whose favorite band is Evanescence. “They’re playing really good music. “And the guitarist,” she pauses, “I wouldn’t kick him out of bed.”
